Too many options to juggle. What should I do?

I’ll get off the marketing topic for today’s post and talk about “options.” So when you were a kid, the sky was the limit in terms of your future. You could be an astronaut, engineer, scientist, president, writer, artist, rock musician and etc. As you grew up, you started to see some doors close. In college, you decided to be an engineer and not a music major. When you got out of college you decided to be a software engineer for a defense company. You worked at this company for 6 years. Doors were closing left and right since you were choosing to be a particular type of engineer.

Even though many doors are now closed, you still have many doors that remain open. You could change careers by leveraging your degrees. You could switch to a different defense company. You could get your Masters / MBA / PHD or etc. Chances are that if you stay in a similar path, you will end up living a pretty good life. You still have many “options” available to you!

Now the question: Is having to many options a bad thing? Look at the people with no options; people that are constrained by the fact that they do not have a degree. What can these people do? Maybe, work at the same low paying job for the rest of their lives struggling to live. Some of these people say “enough” and decide to be their own boss in an entrepreneurial endeavor. Some of these people live the American dream and strike gold.

On the other hand, the people with degrees and experience are lured into employment. After all, you get benefits, 401K matching, paid vacation, a decent salary and more. Having a degree and experience makes most people want to be employees. This is not a bad thing.

In all, I guess I am saying that those that want to be entrepreneurs but have many “options” can not break free from employment because employment is convenient.

This blog is simply smashing. In my humble opinion of course. As this post is rather debatable I don’t think all your blog visitors are going to agree with it.
